Buy land from city:

Proposals are due at 11 a.m. today for the purchase of land at 137 N. Water St. from the City of Batavia. The city hopes a duplex will be built on it. For details, visit cityofbatavia.net or contact Meredith Hannah at (630) 454-2061 or econdev@cityofbatavia.net.

Batavia toy drive:

Donations for the Batavia ACCESS committee's annual toy drive are due Thursday. New items and used items in good condition, except bicycles, may be brought to the Batavia fire stations at 800 E. Wilson St., or 1400 W. Main St. Checks, made out to "ACCESS TOYS," should be sent to the Batavia Police Department, 100 N. Island Ave. Also, names of potential recipients may be called in to Mildred Bailey at (630) 879-3974 or Ruth Johnsen at (630) 879-6270.

String trio to play:

Musica del Amore will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water St., Batavia. Admission is free. The classical string ensemble features three St. Charles East High School musicians.

Christmas on the prairie:

The 1843 Durant House Museum's Candle-Light Open House is from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Costumed docents will welcome visitors into the prairie homestead adorned in period décor, and serve hot cider and ginger cakes. There will be music and stories. Admission is $3. Durant House is in the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, on Dean Street west of Randall Road in St. Charles. Call (630) 277-6424 or visit ppfv.org.

Anime Club for teens:

The Anime Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday and Dec. 23 at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. Teens 13 and older who are interested in anime and manga animation and comics may attend. Registration is not required. For more information call Lee Blakley, (630) 879-4777.

Give food at 'Messiah':

A collection of food for the Northern Illinois Food Bank will take place during the performance of the Christmas portion of Handel's oratorio "The Messiah" at the 9 and 10:30 a.m. services Sunday at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church, Third and Main Streets, St. Charles. No glass jars, please. Money will also be accepted. See bakermemorialchurch.org.

Lighting change:

The Geneva school district has received $36,500 from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation as reimbursement for lighting projects at Harrison Street and Western Avenue elementary schools. The work was done during renovations in 2008 and 2009. More than 110 fixtures were removed, and many remaining were replaced with more energy-efficient ones.
