Geneva to begin installing red-light cameras

Red-light traffic violation cameras are coming to Geneva, nearly two years after the city council approved them.

Weather-permitting, installation of cameras will begin Tuesday at Kirk Road and Fabyan Parkway. Cameras later will be installed on Randall Road at intersections with Williamsburg Avenue and Fargo Boulevard.

The Geneva council approved a contract for the cameras with RedFlex Traffic Systems in January 2008, but the company first had to obtain permits from Kane County before installing them because Randall and Kirk are county highways.

St. Charles, which also has a contract with RedFlex, turned on its cameras in September 2008.

Geneva hopes to have its cameras in place by Feb. 1.

News releases will be sent out before the camera is turned on, and motorists will have a 15-day grace period of warning tickets before fines are assessed, police said.
