Time to get tough with DUI drivers

The headline on the Nov. 23 Daily Herald article is shocking: "Man charged with eighth DUI offense." Huh? Eighth offense? Something's wrong in Denmark.

How about the Illinois General Assembly getting tough with DUI drivers by enacting stringent DUI laws? Perhaps a mandatory five-year confinement in an Alcoholics Anonymous program for each DUI offense? Would that get their attention? A slap on the wrist does no good at all.
