Friday's Lake County roundup

Stevenson's girls basketball team stayed perfect in the Maine West tournament Friday night.

Michelle O'Brien scored 15 points, as the Patriots outlasted host Maine West 44-41.

Stevenson (4-2) is 4-0 in the tournament and can wrap up the championship today when it plays Hersey at 2:30 p.m. at Maine West.

Stevenson led Maine West 20-16 at halftime and 31-30 after three quarters.

"It was like pulling teeth to get anything going," Patriots coach Tom Dineen said. "Defensively, we were a little more aggressive than we have been lately. But we missed some easy ones and didn't get the ball to people who were in position to get easy ones."

Dineen credited McKinley Imus (7 points) for providing a spark down the stretch with a couple of steals and clutch baskets. Kari Moffat and Kelsey Simon each had 8 points for the Patriots.

Grayslake Central 52, CL Central 35: Skyler Jessop scored 16 points for the Rams, who won their fifth in a row.

Grayslake Central (5-1) also received 10 points apiece from Alex Scarbro and Kat Dickson.

Lakes 37, St. Joseph (Wis.) 33: The Eagles did it again Thursday night.

Playing in Racine, Wis., Lakes won the nonconference game for its second win in a row.

The Eagles had just two wins in four years before this season.

Lakes trailed 8-1 after one quarter but took a one-point lead into halftime. The Eagles got behind again in the third, trailing by eight. With three minutes to go, the Eagles still trailed by four.

"The girls are showing the will to win," first-year coach Pete Schneider said. "They will not give up."

St Joseph's Kailee Cable (14 points) knocked down four 3-pointers, three coming in the fourth.

"We changed up personnel and Jen Totten did a great job on her to hold her down in the last four minutes, as St. Joe's ran many screens to try and free her," Schneider said.

Lakes went 7 of 8 from the line in the fourth.

Totten led Lakes in scoring with 11 points, Ashley Parmly had 10 and Mary Doupis and Asja Tripplett chipped in seven apiece. Schneider said Jenelle Chrtistiansen and Jenna Schellinger played great defense.

"We are making it happen with a ton of heart and effort," Schneider said. "When we get all the skills and better knowledge of the game, we will be a solid team. These ladies are working hard and will not give up. We will keep improving, but right now getting a couple of wins is great for us."
