Snow makes morning commute hazardous in Lake, McHenry counties

Road conditions in Lake and McHenry counties are brutal, officials said, and motorists are being warned that black ice conditions exist, specifically on bridges and off-ramps.

Meteorologists are saying about an inch of snow fell throughout the Chicago area overnight, but that snow quickly melted then froze, creating the dangerous driving conditions.

The hardest hit areas seem to be in McHenry and Lake counties, where slippery conditions have left numerous cars in ditches.

Of those accidents Friday morning, police dispatchers in both McHenry and Lake are reporting only very minor injuries.

Salt crews in both counties are out trying to melt the ice. But, the slippery conditions are expected to continue until it warms up later this morning.

Illinois police dispatchers report good driving conditions on most expressways, but also cautioned that some slippery spots remain.

To emphasize that point, there were two rollover accidents within one block of each other on the Tri-State tollway near Grand Avenue early Friday. Drivers were not injured in either accident and the scene was cleared, dispatchers said.
