No injuries in early-morning Naperville house fire

No one was injured in an early-morning house fire Friday on Stewart Drive near Naperville, fire officials said.

Naperville Fire Department investigators determined a ceiling fan in a second-floor bathroom had an electrical malfunction that caused the fire, a news release said. The fire caused about $85,000 in damage to the home, which is uninhabitable until repairs can be made.

The fire was reported about 3 a.m. on the 5S200 block of Stewart Drive in unincorporated DuPage County. First-arriving firefighters saw fire on the roof, and the sole occupant was found safely outside, officials said.

Firefighters initially attacked the fire from outside of the building with a truck hose, then entered the building with hose lines to put out the blaze, officials said. The fire was under control within 20 minutes after the arrival of the fire department, fire officials said.

The homeowner told fire investigators he was awakened by unusual sounds coming from the roof, and upon investigation, saw smoke outside.

Officials said the smoke detectors did not activate because the fire was mainly in the attic.
