Algonquin teen denies role in drive-by shooting

An Algonquin teen pleaded not guilty Friday to charges he fired a 9 mm Uzi submachine gun into a Carpentersville house in June, striking no one.

Helver Martinez, 17, of the 1400 block of Charles Avenue, was arraigned in Kane County Circuit Court on one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm. He faces four to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Martinez is accused of firing 28 rounds into a house on the 0-100 block of Alameda Drive as he passed in a car shortly after midnight June 8. At least three people were home.

Police have said Martinez likely was targeting a rival gang member, but no one was hit by the gunfire.

Martinez remained in the Kane County jail Friday with bond set at $500,000. He returns to court Dec. 18.
