Jogger attacked on Elgin trail

A 19-year-old teen was briefly knocked unconscious Tuesday afternoon while jogging on a trail near Elgin but escaped her attacker with minor bruises, officials said.

Elgin police and the Kane County Forest Preserve police are now looking for a man in his 20s who is suspected of attacking the teen at 1:50 p.m. on the Fox River Trail, north of Interstate 90.

Forest preserve spokeswoman Laurie Metanchuk said the jogger was headed north on the trail when she was struck on the head from behind with a blunt object.

The teen briefly lost consciousness but woke up to see her attacker standing over her, Metanchuk said.

The teen escaped and ran to a nearby house where the homeowner called police. The attacker left the scene in an older model, tan mid-size car.

"It is unclear how she did get away, but she was able to get away," Metanchuk said.

The teen was not sexually assaulted and elected to see her private physician instead of going to the hospital for a bump on her head.

The case was initially reported to police as an attempted sexual assault but authorities are now investigating it as a battery.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man about 5-foot-5 and weighing 150 pounds with an athletic build. He was wearing a black hoodie with a tan jacket and had short spiked black hair and a goatee consisting of a few days' growth.

If you have information on the attack, call Elgin Crime Stoppers at (847) 695-4195 or forest preserve police at (630) 232-8400.
