Hampshire stays unbeaten
Hampshire scored just about every which way against Belvidere. Early on, the Whip-Purs pounded it inside to Chrissy Heine and Alex Dumoulin. Later, Karla Vietinghoff's quick hands led to some fast-break baskets. Finally, Jessica Van Dorin nailed a couple of 3-pointers.
It all added up to a 58-28 victory in the DeKalb Turkey Tossup Tournament Friday. Hampshire (3-0) plays the host Barbs at 3:30 p.m. today with a chance for the tourney title.
"We put up 58 points in a variety of ways, and that makes me happy," said Hampshire coach Sue Ellett. "Then I'm not stuck one way or another."
Led by Heine and Alex Dumoulin, the Whips raced to a 16-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. A 10-2 run to open the second half put the game out of reach.
"That's the game plan, come out strong," said Alex Dumoulin. "That's what we like to do, and the finish up strong, too."
Heine and Vietinghoff finished with 12 points apiece to lead Hampshire's balanced attack. Alex Dumoulin finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds, and Van Dorin and Cassie Dumoulin had 6 points apiece. All 9 Hampshire players scored.
"We worked out some things defensively today that I liked and that we're going to be able to use the rest of the weekend and through conference play," said Ellett. "And Karla Vietinghoff got on the scoreboard a little more, which we've been waiting for."
Belvidere (1-3) was led by Tahlar Proctor with 9 points.
