Buffalo Grove rolls as Recht, others find their roles

Buffalo Grove's first three wins of the year, including an 82-28 knockout of UC Woodlawn on Friday night, have given the Bison an opportunity to find their roles.

"We went into the tournament with the hopes of finding a nice rotation of players," said Bison coach Ryan O'Connor. "We were also hoping to find a consistent defensive effort, which we have."

Now things get a little rougher, as Stevenson comes calling tonight in the championship game of the Bison Classic.

"Dan Recht has really played well'" said O'Connor. "Every team needs a 'garbage man' type player. A player who plays tough defense and work's under the boards. Dan does that for us."

Recht led the Bison (3-0) with 15 points in the win. Mike Cornely picked up 12 points, and Nick Prus and sophomore reserve Sam Wacker (6-foot-5) both added 10 points. Wacker also picked up 5 rebounds.

"I liked Wacker's play," said O'Connor. "He played freshman ball last year. He has stepped up for us and we've been able to provide him with some minutes."

Defense will still be the key, and that mean Recht will be a key component against the Patriots.

"I'm a defensive-minded player," said Recht. "This year I want to be able to be more of an offensive threat. We still know that as a team we have to play defense. That's what we will have to do against Stevenson and to contend in the Mid-Suburban East.

"In the tournament, I've felt that I have improved each game."

Buffalo Grove was never threatened by the Torches after breaking out to a 11-0 lead in the game's first 1:45. The Bison led 28-10 after the first quarter and 50-12 at halftime.

Greg Jones led UC Woodlawn (0-3) with 16 points.
