Burlington Central gives Lisle a lost feeling
Lisle's bus got lost on the way to the Burlington Central girls basketball tournament Thursday. Then, even after the game started, the Rockets made the Lions look lost awhile longer.
The Rockets built a 27-point lead after three quarters, then survived Lisle's furious fourth-quarter comeback for a 60-46 win in the Central High School Thanksgiving Classic.
Jordan Maisto scored 18 points, including a shot from beyond half-court to end the third quarter, and Taylor Colby added 15 points for the Rockets.
Maisto's bomb gave the Rockets a 49-22 lead after 24 minutes. But Colleen Drennan and some intense full-court pressure helped the Lions get back in the game. Drennan finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Tara Sarb scored 6 of her 7 points in the fourth quarter before fouling out.
Early on it was all Rockets. The hosts scored the first 11 points and led 16-4 after one quarter. They started the second half the same way, scoring the first 10 points after the break.
The Rockets (2-0) appear to be adapting quickly to new coach Stephanie Smith's system.
"Some of the kids, this is their third system in 3 years and they're responding very well," said Smith. "When you play as a team, the results are going to be a 'W' most of the time.
"We've got to work on boxing out, though," she said of the Rockets, who were outrebounded 36-30.
Maisto managed to one-up her coach.
"They wanted to scrimmage, I wanted to do ballhandling, so I said if you make the half-court shot, you pick," said Smith. "She missed it and I made it so they had to do ballhandling. So she got me back today. She said, 'I got you, coach.' "
