Sun-Times' old stock ticker symbol debuts with new owner

Here's hoping this SVN has better luck.

Less than a month after the Sun-Times Media Group was sold out of bankruptcy to a group of investors, a small part of the struggling media company is being reincarnated on the New York Stock Exchange.

The owner of the Chicago Sun-Times and dozens of suburban publications used to trade with the stock ticker "SVN." That was before the paper was sold to businessman James Tyree for $5 million. He and his investors also took on the company's $22 million in debt.

But on Friday, a Chinese company that owns discount hotels took control of the symbol when it launched an initial public offering.

So far, the ticker symbol's been good for 7 Days Group Holdings.

Shares of the new SVN were up more than 17 percent in midday trading Friday.
