Lombard man pleads guilty for role in shooting
A 28-year-old Lombard man who DuPage County prosecutors said supplied the handgun that was used in an accidental shooting last month was sentenced to 90 days in jail Wednesday.
Lombard police said Nicholas W. Brown and two other people were hanging out at Brown's house and drinking in the early morning hours of Oct. 19 when Brown brought out a .22-caliber gun to show off to the others. As the gun was being handled by 28-year-old April L. Sheelk of Lombard, it accidentally discharged, she told police. The bullet struck a 26-year-old Lombard man who was Sheelk's boyfriend at the time.
The man suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from an area hospital later that day.
Sheelk was charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of a firearm, reckless conduct and battery. Brown was charged with felony possession of a firearm because his firearm owner's identification card had been revoked. He pleaded guilty to that charge Wednesday. He will be required to serve at least half of the jail sentence and is credited for the time he has served since his arrest. He also received two years probation.
