Scouting: Butler @ Northwestern
Butler (1-0) at Northwestern (1-0)
When: 7 p.m. Wednesday at Welsh-Ryan Arena
TV: BTN
Radio: WGN 720-AM
Skinny: This was supposed to be a huge opportunity for the Wildcats to prove themselves on the national stage against the 11th-ranked Bulldogs. Instead, with seniors Kevin Coble (fractured foot) and Jeff Ryan (torn knee ligament) done for the year, NU is back on the path of self-discovery. Coach Bill Carmody needs at least one of these three unproven guys - junior forward Mike Capocci, freshman guard Alex Marcotullio, Batavia sophomore Nick Fruendt - to step forward and become a legitimate contributor. In an intriguing twist, NU sophomore forward John Shurna reunites with two teammates from USA Basketball's gold-medal-winning U-19 team. Shurna contributed 6.0 points and 3.9 rebounds in 12.2 minutes per game, while Butler's Gordon Hayward (10.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg) and Shelvin Mack (5.9 ppg) combined to average 40 minutes per game.
