Woman charged after stabbing at Elgin party

Friday, Nov. 13 wasn't just unlucky for guests at an Elgin party, it was violent, authorities say, when a 19-year-old woman stabbed two partygoers in the 700 block of Peck Place.

A Cook County Circuit Court judge today set bond at $40,000 for Mercedes Valldeperas, charged with aggravated battery with a weapon in the Friday night incident. Valldeperas, of the 0-100 block of East Hattendorf in Roselle, got into a verbal altercation with another woman that escalated, said assistant state's attorney Matt Fakhoury. He said Valldeperas then pulled out a knife she had with her and stabbed the 27-year-old woman in the back.

The victim's injuries required 29 stitches. A 21-year-old man suffered a cut to his arm in the incident.

If convicted of the class 3 felony, Valldeperas could face two to five years in prison. She next appears in a Rolling Meadows courtroom on Dec. 9.
