Chicago Reader owner hires publisher

TAMPA, Fla. -- Alternative weekly publisher Creative Loafing Inc. has named former St. Petersburg Times publisher Marty Petty as its new chief executive officer. The company owns the Chicago Reader.

The Tampa, Fla.-based chain announced the hiring Monday.

Petty left the Times earlier this year as part of a downsizing of its management staff. Under her leadership, the Times last April won two Pulitzer Prizes. One was for national reporting for fact-checking what the candidates said during the 2008 White House campaign, and the other for feature writing for a story about a neglected girl who was unable to talk or feed herself.

Creative Loafing publishes weeklies in Tampa, Sarasota, Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte, N.C., and Washington, D.C. It also publishes the Straight Dope column and Web site.
