The resurrection of 'Poplar Creek'
Poplar Creek is coming back!
Not the actual outdoor music theater that drew thousands to Hoffman Estates throughout the 1980s before being razed in the early '90s, but the name itself.
Just like when "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince" decided he really was Prince after all, "Poplar Creek" will soon be more than just a historical term again.
The strong association Poplar Creek provides people in their 30s and older with its location is why its name is being employed to promote the entertainment district Hoffman Estates is trying to create there.
Village officials this week signed off on a logo incorporating the numbers 59 and 90 with the numerals clustered together in the shape of a crossroads.
That logo is planned to be used in promotional advertising for "Poplar Creek at Fifty-Nine and Ninety."
Components of the entertainment district already in place include the currently struggling Sears Centre Arena and Cabela's outdoor superstore. Still hoped for are a hotel, water park, outdoor arena and even more stores, businesses and restaurants.
The name Poplar Creek is intended not only to help visualize the location but to conjure up memories of fun times spent in the same area.
