Mundelein targets streets for repair
Looking ahead nearly two years, Mundelein officials this week approved a tentative street-repair schedule for 2011.
A cost estimate hasn't been determined for the 15 projects, which will involve repaving, patching and similar efforts, Assistant Village Administrator Mike Flynn said. Village officials typically budget $2 million annually for such repairs.
The projects were identified far in advance so officials could budget them more accurately, prepare grant applications and take other steps, Village Engineer Bill Emmerich wrote in a recent memo.
The projects are divided into two lists. One list, containing nine projects, will be scheduled for 2011. The remaining six streets will be improved in 2011 only if planned improvements to West Hawley Street are not yet under way.
The Hawley Street project, which could start in 2011 but hasn't been finalized, would focus on the stretch of road between Route 45 and Midlothian Road. It could get a landscaped median, turn lanes or other improvements.
It is not, however, a done deal - which is why Flynn wants a second list of local improvements prepared as a backup.
"We want to make sure we have the streets designed and ready to go if Hawley gets pushed off another year," Flynn said.
About 1½ miles of roadway are on the first list. The streets included are:
• Hammond Street, between Greenview Avenue and Lake Street.
•The Chandler Drive cul-de-sac at Prairie Avenue.
•Emerald Avenue, between Courtland and Division streets.
•Hawthorn Boulevard, between Balmoral and Woodlawn drives.
•Hawthorn Boulevard, between Lincoln Avenue and Lake Street.
•Longwood Terrace, between Diamond Lake Road and Lake Street.
•Hampton Lane, between both ends of the Huntington Drive loop.
•Bedford Road, between Sandhurst Road and Knightsbridge Court.
•Eaton Way, between Huntington Drive and Sandhurst Road.
The second list covers less than a half-mile of roadway. Its streets are:
•Crystal Street, between Midlothian Road and Regent Drive.
•Ansley Lane, between Bridgewater Lane and Southport Road.
•Bridgewater Lane, between Courtland Street and Ansley Court.
•The Bingham Court cul-de-sac, near Bingham Circle.
•Bingham Circle, between Bingham Court and Compton Lane.
•Compton Lane, between Bingham Circle and Southport Road.
The village board approved the lists Monday.
The panel also agreed to hire a McHenry firm called the SEC Group to design the project. The company will be paid nearly $173,000 for the work.
