Aurora boy in critical condition after pool accident

A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after falling into a swimming pool and nearly drowning at his Aurora home Sunday afternoon.

Several family members and neighbors were performing CPR on the child near an above ground pool on the 200 block of Hampshire Avenue when police arrived about noon, Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said.

Two police officers took over and continued CPR until paramedics arrived. The child was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where he was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He remains in critical condition, Ferrelli said.

Ferrelli said the boy was outside with his father working in the yard when the boy disappeared. Ferrelli said the father believed the child had gone into the home and after about 10-15 minutes, both he and his wife began to look for the boy after realizing the child was not inside.

The boy's mother found the child floating in the swimming pool, located off a deck in the backyard of the home. The pool contained about four feet of water.

Ferrelli said foul play is not suspected.
