Don't cut history center funding
I was shocked and dismayed when I learned of the proposed elimination of funding for the Des Plaines Historical Society. I believe that such an action would be a terrible mistake, which would have long-term negative consequences for our city.
I have worked in Des Plaines for the past thirteen years, and have been a resident for the past nine. I moved down from Rockford specifically to work for the Historical Society. Although my native city is almost three times as large, it has no comparable institution that comes anywhere close to the DPHS in terms of community outreach and impact. The History Center is a destination for people from the entire Chicagoland area, and beyond. It is recognized statewide as one of the most progressive organizations of its kind.
Everyone knows that times are tough for state and local governments, and for the cultural institutions that depend upon them. Difficult decisions must be made regarding the allocation of resources. But we must be careful not to destroy the delicate fabric that connects us with our past, for that same fabric connects us, in the truest sense, with ourselves. It gives us our place in the long sweep of history, and puts our lives and dreams in a real and meaningful context. It enriches our humanity.
I know from personal experience how hard the staff at the History Center works, and what caring, generous people they are.
I urge Mayor Moylan and the members of the city council to continue to support the Des Plaines Historical Society. To do so would be a wise investment in both the past and the future. Along with our wonderful public library, the DPHS is the cultural heart and soul of our city.
