St. Charles cocaine dealer gets six years

A St. Charles man was sentenced Thursday to six years in prison for selling less than a gram of cocaine to an undercover police officer near a church.

Marcus Burton, 23, of the 6N900 block of Roosevelt Street, pleaded guilty to unlawful delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church and was sentenced in a plea deal accepted by Kane County Judge T. Jordan Gallagher.

Assistant State's Attorney Pam Monaco said Burton made the $80 deal July 2 near a church in the South Elgin area. "It was the first of a couple different controlled buys" involving the North Central Narcotics Task Force and South Elgin police, she said.

Burton had faced an enhanced sentence of six to 30 years in prison for the Class 1 felony because of prior convictions, including possession of a stolen motor vehicle in 2002 and 2005.

In exchange for pleading guilty, he received the minimum, with credit for 99 days served in the county jail. Burton also was ordered to pay about $2,300 in fines and costs.
