Second armed robbery suspect captured

McHenry County Sheriff's police have captured a second Algonquin man wanted for armed robbery in connection with the ripoff of a suspected drug supplier during a deal gone bad.

Frank J. Cmiel, 27, of the 700 block of Circle Drive, was arrested at home Tuesday morning, police said, ending a nearly weeklong search for a man investigators initially knew only as "Joe."

He faces charges of aggravated battery and armed robbery stemming from the Oct. 27 incident in which a Lake in the Hills man said he was held by two men at knifepoint and robbed of $500 in marijuana.

"Through the investigation, we learned that 'Joe' was really Frank Cmiel and he was arrested (Tuesday) morning without incident," sheriff's Sgt. Michael Cisner said.

Cmiel was taken to the McHenry County jail, where he remained in custody late Tuesday unable to post a $15,000 cash bond.

Also in jail is his co-defendant, Yacoup K. Baghdadi, 19, of the 700 block of Evergreen in Algonquin, who also faces armed robbery and aggravated battery charges for the holdup.

The charges allege Baghdadi and Cmiel robbed the man after meeting at an Algonquin restaurant Oct. 27 for an arranged drug deal. The man told investigators he drove the defendants from the restaurant to a street corner in Lake in the Hills, thinking they were going to complete the deal, when "Joe" grabbed him from behind and held a knife to his throat.

The suspects, according to the victim, stole his marijuana and tried to take his car keys before he managed to escape.

Cisner said the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and further charges may be pending.
