Four teens stabbed in Wheeling gang fight
Four teenage males were hospitalized with stab wounds following a gang-related fight early Sunday morning in Wheeling, police said.
No suspects are in custody in connection to the incident, which took place shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday outside near Elmhurst and Dennis roads. Wheeling police arrived at the scene and found two male victims who had been stabbed. Officers located two additional victims a short time later.
The victims, who range in age from 17 to 19 years old, were transported to area hospitals with stab wounds to their backs, arms and legs. One was stabbed in the scalp. Three had been treated and released as of Monday afternoon, Deputy Chief William Benson said. One remained in the hospital.
Benson said gang slogans were yelled before the attack and that the department's investigations division is following up on several leads. The exact number of offenders is unclear, but police believe there were only the four victims.
Police won't release further information, citing an active investigation.
The fight took place less than half a mile north of Wheeling High School, but Benson didn't know whether the victims were students there. He said the school has a security staff and a Wheeling police officer on campus full time, but that no counseling or special alerts were implemented Monday.
"There are no ties indicating this had anything to do with Wheeling High School," Benson said.
Northwest Suburban High School District 214 officials didn't return a call seeking comment.
