Elk Grove grad Sloan stars at Marquette

The day after capturing its first Big East women's soccer regular-season title, Marquette University had a pair of players earn weekly awards as the league announced its final honorees of the season.

One of them was four-year Elk Grove varsity standout Rachael Sloan, a sophomore forward who earned Big East 0ffensive player of the week accolades.

Sophomore teammate Natalie Kulla earned Big East goalkeeper of the week recognition.

The duo helped the Golden Eagles capture the team's first American Division title with a 1-0 win at St. John's on Oct. 25.

Sloan helped the Golden Eagles to a 2-0-0 record last week. The sophomore totaled 3 points and factored in both game-winning goals.

In a 1-0 overtime win at Syracuse, she scored the game-winner in the 101st minute.

In a 1-0 victory at St. John's, she assisted on the game-winning goal in the 87th minute.

Football

Mike Egebrecht (Buffalo Grove) of Concordia had 6 catches for 77 yards in a 64-14 victory over Maranatha Baptist.

Women's cross country

Elaine Simpson (St. Viator) is a member of the women's cross country team at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, which is trying to advance to the NCAA Division III national championships for the fourth straight year.

Last year, Simpson was named a Great Lakes all-region selection and earned UAA all-academic honors.

Now she is enjoying her best season, placing first in two races. She had a superb win at the Calvin College Invitational in Grand Rapids, Mich., with a 17:50 in the 5K which earned her UAA Conference athlete of the week honors. The Case women's cross country team won the Division III team title at the All-Ohio championships for the fourth consecutive year, and Simpson led the team with a fourth-place finish. The team is ranked 13th among Division III schools.

Women's swimming

Hope College sophomore Sarah Sohn (Prospect) was named a 2009 Individual Scholar All-American by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

To be eligible for this award, students must finish the school year with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, as well as having qualified for the 2009 NCAA Division III championships.

Sohn was also named to the 2008-09 academic honor roll of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. In order to be named, students need to maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA the entire school year.

• Illinois State diver Katelyn Prorok (Hersey) won her second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference diver of the week honor. Prorok received the accolade after qualifying for the NCAA Zone C regional diving competition in a triangular home opener against MVC competitor Evansville and Big 12 foe Iowa State.

Prorok dove past the qualifying score on the 1-meter with a final total of 266.35. In her qualifying effort, Prorok outperformed her season bests from the previous week on both the 1- and 3-meter boards. She leads the Missouri Valley Conference on both boards with her season-best scores of 266.35 and 265.60.

The Redbirds diver finished in second place on both boards but took first between the conference foes.

Women's tennis

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tennis championship as Ingrid Stensvag (Palatine) and Annie Smith won both of their matches at No. 2 doubles after a first-round bye, defeating Sarah Schoenwaelder and Carlie Bohrman of La Crosse 8-5 in the championship match. Stensvaag and Smith are 16-2 this season.

Stensvag was also named Academic All-American by ESPN the Magazine last year.

She is a two-time member of the WIAC scholastic honor roll and has been recognized on the dean's list, while claiming the UW-Whitewater academic achievement award every year. Stensvaag is the sixth Warhawk to earn the Kruckman Award in tennis.

Stensvag (12-2) also contributed to UW-W's point total in the meet by finishing third at No. 2 singles.

Women's volleyball

The University of Cincinnati volleyball team set a school record with its 24th consecutive home win in a 3-0 sweep of visiting Marquette at Fifth Third Arena.

Junior Annie Fesl (Hersey) helped lead Cincinnati (18-8; 8-1 in the Big East) to the victory, posting a double-double with 29 assists and 11 digs, while adding 3 service aces and tying a career high with 5 kills.

Soccer

Elmhurst men's soccer goalkeeper Sebastian Domczewski (St. Viator), a senior, was named a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's soccer player of the week.

Domczewski posted a 1-0-1 record in goal last week while helping Elmhurst capture its first CCIW championship in men's soccer. Domczewski recorded 4 saves and earned his fifth shutout of the season in a 4-0 win at Lake Forest. He allowed just 1 goal and recorded 6 saves in 110 minutes of a 1-1 tie against Wheaton. The tie clinched Elmhurst's first CCIW men's soccer title, as the Bluejays finished unbeaten in conference play at 5-0-2. .

• Augustana men's senior midfielder Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove) has been named to the first team of ESPN the Magazine's® academic all-district team for the college division in district five. Wallner becomes eligible to be placed on the ballot for ESPN the Magazine® Academic All-America honors.

After tying for the team lead in scoring last season with 5 goals and 12 points, Wallner is Augustana's third-leading scorer this year. All 3 of his goals have been game-winners, and he also has 1 assist for 7 points. In 61 career games, (59 starts), he has scored 12 goals and totaled 30 points.

• Scott Sutarik, a junior who attends Westminster Christian High School in Elgin and resides in Palatine, was invited last spring to a tryout with a German U18 academy soccer club, the only American to receive such an invitation. Sutarik was the goalkeeper this fall for Class 1A regional Westminster Christian and now joins the his traveling team (the Magic). He has played with the Olympic Development Program for two years.

Basketball

The Buffalo Grove boys' feeder basketball program will be holding tryouts for sixth, seventh and eighth grade teams on Sunday, Dec. 6, from noon-4 p.m. at Buffalo Grove High School.

All players trying out must live in the Buffalo Grove attendance area. Parents are required to register their son upon drop-off at noon and are asked to return at 3 p.m.

Those selected to play on the 2009-10 teams will attend a parent/player meeting from 3-4 p.m.

Practices begin in December, and the season ends in mid-March.

Softball

The Stone City Shark Softball Pitcher/Catcher Exposure Camp will hold its annual open house on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in the Lockport Township High School field house.

Check-in time will be no later than 10:15 a.m., with the exposure portion running from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Over 200 college coaches will be invited to attend, and 30 to 50 are expected to be present.

Up to 54 pitchers and 54 catchers will be registered. The camp will accept 27 catcher applications, then start a catcher wait list. If 27 more are reached on the wait list, the camp will be open to 54 catchers to keep group rotations even.

Each camper will be assigned a number on a shirt and will work out in groups of nine for three rotations each of seven-minute intervals. The college coaches in attendance will be provided with a roster of the pitchers and catchers. This roster will include academic and personal data about each player. Players will be radar-timed at the site.

Pitchers will have the opportunity to display their skills and pitching form in front of over 30 college coaches. Underhand throwing speed will be radar-gunned and results sent to college coaches across the country. This year, pitchers will be throwing from 43 feet.

Catchers have the opportunity to display receiving, blocking, and throwing skills. Overhand throwing speed will be radar-gunned. Catchers will also be timed glove to glove and home to second base. Results will be sent to college coaches across the country.

The cost is $200 for pitchers and $150 for catchers. This is a premier Pitcher/Catcher Exposure camp in the country that has been held for 20 years. Proceeds are used for the Derald Whiteford Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Stone City Building Fund.

Each participant is given a souvenir T-shirt as a memento. Food and refreshments will be available to each camper and her family during the camp at no additional cost.

If you are an underclassman (freshman through junior pitchers or catchers with a minimum 2.5 (of 4.0) GPA, and you would like to share in this experience, please complete an application and mail it with a check for $200 to Don and Carol Hinck, 9 Cobblewood Lane, Hawthorn Woods, Il. 60047.
