West Dundee Village Hall to celebrate 100 years

The Dundee Township Historical Society will throw a birthday party Sunday for West Dundee Village Hall - and a few other structures - to commemorate 100 years.

The society's Historic Sites Committee will present a historic plaque to village hall, as well as three structures in West Dundee and Carpentersville. Plaques are awarded to sites at least 100 years old and of historical significance to foster appreciation of and educate about the area's heritage, a historical society release said.

"It is always nice to recognize the foresight that these people had many years ago to build these historic buildings as well as they did," West Dundee Village President Larry Keller said.

Historical society President Marge Edwards said the plaque presentation allows residents to learn about history in their own neighborhoods.

"It is part of our history," she said. "All of these buildings are all an important part of our history and all have a story."

Built in 1909, the Prairie-style building at 102 S. Second St. once housed the village jail and the township library, said Jack Wendt, chairman of the historic sites committee.

The village hall was renovated in 1992-93 when exterior and interior restoration work was done to maintain the building's historic character.

In addition to West Dundee Village Hall, buildings at 502 S. Second St. and 407 Liberty St. in West Dundee and 142 E. Main St. in Carpentersville will also join the list of more than 170 places in the township to receive the plaque.

Kane County Board member John Fahy will present the historical society with grant money to purchase a new computer, PowerPoint projector and software.

The presentation begins at 2 p.m. at the Dundee Township Historical Society museum, 426 Highland Ave., West Dundee.
