Scouting Curie @ Warren
No. 11 Chicago Curie (6-3) at No. 6 Warren (7-2)
When: 5 p.m., Saturday
Last week: Chicago Curie def. Brooks Academy, 42-0; Warren lost to Stevenson, 26-14.
Playoff experience: Warren is back in the playoffs for the third straight year and 10th time in the last 11 seasons. The Blue Devils won their Class 8A playoff opener last year, downing York, 21-9, before falling 55-21 to Schaumburg. Chicago Curie is 0-15 in the state playoffs. The Condors are making their third consecutive postseason appearance. They lost to Bolingbrook, 62-13, in Class 8A last year.
Skinny: While Warren should be a heavy favorite, Chicago Curie comes in having won its last four games, posting shutouts in three of them. The Condors went 4-1 in the Chicago Public, Illini (Red Bird), finishing second behind Simeon. They finished the regular season by winning 42-0 over Brooks, which made the playoffs and plays Vernon Hills on Saturday. "I think they're really a good football team," Warren coach Dave Mohapp said. "We saw film of their game against Brooks and, man, did they ever look impressive. They've really been on a hot streak. Their losses have all come to good football team - Bolingbrook, Tinley Park (Andrew) and Simeon. They're playing good football."... Curie averages 25 points per game and allows an average of nearly 17. The Condoras run a spread offense, which concerns Mohapp. "They've got a very fast team," Mohapp said. "A sophomore is their quarterback and he's just excellent, a threat anywhere on the field. He can run it or throw it, and he has good receivers. They might be the fastest team that we've played this year." ... Despite losing to Stevenson and thus missing out on earning a share of the North Suburban Lake Division title, Warren has been one of Lake County's top teams all season. The Blue Devils have been led all year by halfback Greg Kennedy and fullback Tom Lindal. Kennedy has rushed for an area-best 1,545 yards (8.3 average) and 20 touchdowns (22 total). Lindal has gained 756 yards (7.5 average) and has scored 13 touchdowns. The Warren offense will see a 3-5 front, which Mohapp says his team has also faced against Libertyville, Lake Zurich and Mundelein. ... Curie dealt with a tragedy during the season, as senior running back/defensive back Quaashi Chandler collapsed on the sidelines during the Condors' Week-2 game against Bolingbrook and passed away that night. He had a history of bronchial asthma.
