Five outstanding students of the month at Buffalo Grove High School

Five outstanding students are the Students of the Month at Buffalo Grove High School for October 2009.

• Senior Brittany Fromm of Arlington Heights was nominated by Career Technology Education teacher Corinne Ginder. "Brittany has participated in my classes of Human Growth and Development, Preschool Practicum 1, and Preschool Practicum 2," said Ginder. "She is an outgoing individual with self-directed goals. Academically, she strives for perfection in completing each assignment with great concern for accuracy and timeliness. Brittany is mature beyond her years, interacting with peers and adults on a level that demonstrates sensitivity and concern. It is apparent that she loves the children and they love her."

• The Foreign Language/Social Science/English Language Learners division has chosen senior Kristen Muller of Arlington Heights. Her Advanced Placement French teacher, Barbara Meyer, commented, "Kristen is a very motivated student. She not only contributes to the French program inside of the classroom, but also outside of the classroom as she serves as the French Club president. She is never too busy to help others and to encourage them in their study of both the French language and culture. Kristen has been and will continue to be an integral part of the French program."

• Senior Paulina Mateja of Arlington Heights is Student of the Month for English/Fine Arts. Orchestra director Elizabeth Magill nominated her for the honor, citing Mateja's humble manner, dedication, leadership ability and hard work. "Paulina is a senior violinist in the BGHS Orchestras and is also a fine classical guitarist," said Magill. "She is often found leading sectionals and helping her peers practice difficult passages, and is always eager and prepared for class to begin. She most recently played at Forest View Educational Center for a Community Education event, where she wowed the audience on her classical guitar. Paulina plans on majoring in music and anthropology. She is a great role model for all of the BGHS Orchestra students and will be a leader throughout her life."

• The Physical Education/Health/Driver's Education department selected junior Eduardo Guzman of Wheeling to be recognized this month. Physical education teacher Tim Roe said, "Eduardo works hard on a daily basis. His efforts include running each fitness day, leading the class on runs, participating at a high level in all activities, and cooperating with all others in a P.E. setting. Eduardo has a strong energy level toward enhancing his fitness level."

• Junior Andrea Di Prima of Arlington Heights is the Math/Science honoree. Math teacher Stephen Kolodziej said, "Andrea has gotten off to a great start in Honors Pre-Calculus this year, while battling illness. She has gone above and beyond expectations, has worked extremely hard while being sick and has not missed a beat. She is the top student in the class, exemplifies great characteristics and truly is a role model for all student athletes in the community. She takes time out of her day to help her peers in the classroom. Despite all her challenges this quarter, Andrea is always willing to stop her work to help others understand the material."

• Student Services has named freshman Cassandra Schopf of Arlington Heights as Student of the Month. Counselor Maxine Levy commented, "Cassie turns negatives into positives with class and style. She moved from Highland Park two weeks before school started, leaving her friends of nine years. She has made major adjustments in life, including being part of a new blended family. She and her new sister joined Class Board to do something together. Cassie maintains her bright and perky attitude, no matter what."
