Robert Maday finally gets his 13-year sentence -- sans drama

The trip from the Kankakee County jail to the Rolling Meadows courthouse took Robert Maday 40 days, but he finally arrived Tuesday morning to receive his sentence for a string of 2008 bank robberies in Buffalo Grove, Huntley and Lake Zurich.

Two months ago, Assistant public defender Calvin Aguilar and Cook County prosecutors negotiated a sentence of 13 years for Maday in exchange for his guilty plea to robberies he committed between Oct. 29 and Dec. 29, 2008. For sentencing purposes, Maday also admitted to committing four other bank robberies in Arlington Heights, Hoffman Estates, Lake Zurich and Bloomingdale, said Assistant state's attorney Maria McCarthy.

Maday's sentencing was to have taken place Sept. 17 at Rolling Meadows' Third Municipal District. But Maday never made it. After overpowering two armed Cook County state's attorney guards and stealing one of their guns, police say, Maday led suburban and federal authorities on a 26-hour manhunt that included car jackings, a bank robbery and a high-speed chase that ended in a crash and his capture.

Shackled at the feet and waist, the 39-year-old Maday appeared Tuesday before Cook County Circuit Judge Thomas Fecarotta surrounded by a half dozen federal marshals and an equal number of Cook County Sheriff's officers and local detectives. The former Elk Grove Village resident has spent most of the last 22 years in prison and faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life there. He was sentenced to 10 years in a Florida prison in 1987 for robbery, kidnapping, burglary, grand theft and aggravated battery among other charges. He received an additional five years following an escape attempt. In 1993, a Pennsylvania court sentenced him to 12 months probation for reckless endangerment and lewdness. The following year, a U.S. District Court sentenced him to 121/2 years in federal prison for bank robbery. That same year, a Pennsylvania court sentenced him to prison for 5 to 15 years for robbery.

After sentencing Maday to 13 years for the robberies, Fecarotta ordered him held without bond for two carjackings police say he committed following his Sept. 17 escape from custody. The first took place about 10 a.m. Sept. at a Rolling Meadows Meijer Store parking lot, McCarthy said. The second took place about 6:40 a.m. Sept. 18 in the parking lot of a Hoffman Estates dental office, where Maday again brandished a gun and ordered a female victim to surrender her car, McCarthy said.

If convicted of the carjackings, Maday faces 21 to 45 years in prison. His next court appearance on those charges is Nov. 17 in Rolling Meadows. Maday appears in federal court on Friday, Oct. 30, on charges related to his escape, including bank robbery. If convicted, he faces 20 years in a federal prison.
