Stevenson graduate Morrison stars for Drake football

Senior Benny Morrison, in his third season as a middle linebacker for Drake University, has been a consistent contributor to the Bulldogs this fall.

In this week's 21-16 victory over Davidson, Morrison intercepted a pass which led to a 7-0 lead for Drake (6-1, 4-0 in the Pioneer League).

The former Stevenson all-area basketball and football player also blocked a 43-yard field goal attempt by Davidson, which was picked up by teammate Michael Lahart and returned 57 yards for a touchdown and a 21-10 lead.

Morrison has 51 tackles (7.3 per game) this season, with 10 for losses. He also has 3 sacks, 3 forced fumbles 1 interception and 2 blocked field goals.

• In six games this season for Carthage College (4-2, 1-2 CCIW), Evan Jones (Grayslake Central) has completed 186 of 282 passes (66 percent) for 2,109 yards. He has 18 touchdown passes and has been intercepted just nine times.

Jones has had several standout games this season, the most impressive occurring Saturday when he threw 84 passes and completed 47 of them for 562 yards against North Central in a 63-48 Carthage loss. Each of those passing categories was a CCIW record.

Jones' 84 attempts were the second most by a college quarterback in the entire country this year, trailing only J.J. Harp of Division II Eastern New Mexico, who had 94 passes in a game.

North Central sophomore Peter Bulandr (Stevenson) recovered a fumble to end Carthage's first scoring drive of the second half. He also had 3 tackles, bringing his season total to nine.

.•In a 48-25 loss to Wayne State College, Winona State University receiver Sean Hertz (Lakes) caught 6 passes, including 2 for touchdowns.

Volleyball

The Northern Iowa volleyball team (20-2, 11-0) extended its winning streak to 18 matches, remaining unbeaten in Missouri Valley Conference play with a 25-12, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21 in Davies Gym.

Southern Illinois' Jennifer Berwanger (Lake Zurich) recorded her 40th career double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs, adding 1 solo and 1 block assist and hitting a team-best .349.

• Augustana College sophomore Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills) is third on the Vikings with a 1.77 kills-per-game average.

• Aurora University's Jill Smart (Grayslake) had 14 kills in a 25-17,25-19 25-14 victory over Alverno College.

Soccer

The tryouts for the Chicago Magic North Shore Boys High School soccer team is Oct. 31.

The under-15 and under-16 tryouts are Saturday, Oct. 31, from 3-4:30 p.m. The under-17 and under-18 tryouts are Saturday, Oct, 31, from 4:30-6 p.m. at Highland Park High School's St. Johns field.

Basketball

The Carmel Catholic Jr. Corsairs will hold tryouts for their boys feeder program on three dates at Carmel High School.

The tryout dates are as follows: Sunday, Nov. 1 from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5, from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 8 from noon-2 p.m. The tryout fee is $20.00, which includes a T-shirt. For more information, contact Ron Iorio at 312-810-0510.

• The Hersey Jr. Huskies Girls' Feeder basketball tryouts will be held at Hersey High School in the Fieldhouse.

Sixth graders will be 2-4:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 and 8. Seventh graders will be 3:30-5:30 p.m. Nov. 1 and 8. Eighth graders will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. only on Nov. 1. Girls are asked to try attending both. If you can only make one, attend Nov. 1.

Please arrive 15 minutes before to register. You need to bring your own basketball. Players (with their parents) who make the team will meet after tryouts and fees will be collected. Any questions should be e-mailed to robert.pihl@214.org.

• The St. Viator Junior Lions Boys Feeder tryouts will be Sunday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov 21.

On Nov. 8, eighth graders will be from 4-5:30 p.m., seventh graders from 5-6:30 p.m. and sixth graders from 6-7:30 p.m.

On Nov. 21, eighth graders will be from noon-1:30 p.m., seventh graders from 1-2:30 p.m. and sixth graders from 2-3:30 p.m.

Tryouts will be held at Saint Viator High School in the Boler Multipurpose Athletic Center located adjacent to the South parking lot.

Boys are encouraged to participate in both days of tryouts, but it is mandatory to attend at least one session. All boys who may attend Saint Viator High School are eligible for the tryout.

All players making the Junior Lions team will play in every regular-season game they are scheduled to attend. Practices begin in December, and games begin in January. The season runs until late March, just before spring break.
