Police stand off ends at Hanover Park apartment building
A man barricaded himself inside a Hanover Park apartment building Saturday afternoon, the town's mayor said, prompting a significant police response.
Armed officers, including representatives of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System emergency response team, have surrounded the building on Bamburg Court since about 4 p.m. The police activity spread to the nearby the Caputo's Fresh Market store at 1250 Lake St., where customers and employees were able to shop and work but wondered about the police presence.
The store remained open all day, a manager said, but one parking lot exit was blocked off.
Officers armed with rifles took positions near the store, witnesses said.
People who approached the area were told to leave by police.
A Hanover Park police spokesman could not be reached for comment. Mayor Rod Craig said the response was for a possibly suicidal person holed up in a building in the neighborhood.
