Go to township meetings, taxpayers
Kudos to Kathy Salzano, who took on the closely guarded fortress of Addison Township in her letter of Sept. 19. Kathy dared to state some facts and ask some questions, raising the ire of township officials, as represented by Trustee Gus Leventis in his response of Sept. 26.
Leventis, lacking any real argument, focused on attacking Kathy's character. This is clearly a political tactic which demeans the user and not the recipient of the slung dirt. People who know Kathy Salzano admire her commitment to open, honest government. She is a woman who has the guts to stand up and be heard. Leventis, in referring to her attendance at township meetings, is evidently not aware that keeping citizen attendance records for public meetings is in violation of the Open Meetings Act.
What are they trying to hide, attacking people for attending public meetings? I attended the last meeting and could not see much value for my tax dollars. Gus Leventis may be right about one thing: Kathy Salzano is one of the few township residents to attend meetings and ask questions. The meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the township office at 401 N. Addison Road, Addison.
As an interested taxpayer, I checked out the Addison Township Web site for information on their expenditures, agenda, minutes, etc., as suggested by Ms. Salzano in her letter. All I found was a copy of the minutes for June, 2009. Also, the "Community Links" section of the Web site, "for the benefit of Township Residents," has only two links: The Addison Public Library and the Village of Addison. What about the other communities in the township?
Fellow taxpayers, let's start attending those meetings to find out where our tax money is actually going.
