Maybe Degorski's father belongs in jail

Degorski's life was spared. We read his defense about the mitigative evidence of the abuse his father inflicted on him and his siblings. Why isn't the father spending the rest of his life in prison for what the defense said he did to raise such an evil son? I don't get it.
