North, West suburban Metra riders should be in the clear

Metra riders in the North, West and Northwest suburbs aren't expected to be inconvenienced by work to correct problems caused by a freight train derailment, which jammed passenger lines in the southwest suburbs Thursday.

Metra officials said Thursday evening they were unsure if traffic on the Southwest Service to Manhattan or the Heritage Corridor to Joliet would be slowed Friday morning. Evening rush hour riders on those lines were delayed up to an hour due to a Union Pacific locomotive derailment near Union Station and the Chicago River on Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, Amtrak has canceled two morning trains. The 7 a.m. Lincoln Service 301 from Union Station to St. Louis and a morning route from St. Louis into Chicago are canceled. Riders are directed to the next available trains.
