Barrington to celebrate Community Day

Church Women United (CWU) of the Barrington Area will celebrate World Community Day beginning 10:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, 410 North First St., Cary. World Community Day is an occasion for Christian women to pray and work for lasting peace.

The theme, "Piecing Earth Together," focuses on the environment and how everyone is called to work together to be good stewards of the gifts of the earth. Guest speaker is Karen Hewitson, who is currently serving as the Northern Illinois Conference President of United Methodist Women. In 2005, she was one of 15 women in the United States chosen to serve on United Methodist Women's "Green Team" working on environmental justice issues. Hewitson travels throughout the U.S. encouraging everyone to do what they can to save water, recycle and solve the problem of global warming.

CWU of the Barrington Area continues its prison ministry by inviting attendees to bring a gift/donation of new or gently used board games appropriate for girls ages 14-21. The games will be used at Illinois Youth Center Warrenville. Fair Trade items from MayaWorks, products which are woven and sewn by Mayan Indians in the Central Highlands of Guatemala, will be available for purchase.

There will also be an agape luncheon after the service; attendees are asked to bring a sandwich and piece of fruit to share. In keeping with the "green theme," attendees are also encouraged to bring their own mugs to use at the luncheon. For information, call (847) 540-5634.
