Widow of killed pastor praying for suspect
MARYVILLE -- The widow of a pastor gunned down during a Sunday sermon in a southwestern Illinois church says she's praying for the suspect who now may never go to trial.
A Madison County judge this week ruled that Terry Sedlacek is mentally unfit to stand trial in the March 8 killing of the Rev. Fred Winters at the First Baptist Church of Maryville.
Prosecutors and public defenders agree that a psychologist would testify that Sedlacek is a schizophrenic who likely won't give his attorneys accurate information or understand the legal process.
The judge remanded Sedlacek to the custody of the state Department of Human Services for treatment.
Winters' widow, Cindy Winters, says she hopes Sedlacek gets help and "finds peace with God."
