Waukegan High School locked down for about an hour

Waukegan High School's Washington Street campus was locked down for about one hour Wednesday afternoon because of an unspecified security issue, authorities said.

The incident began sometime before 3 p.m., said Bonnie Kuss, executive assistant to Waukegan School District 60 Superintendent Donaldo Bautiste.

Because the campus was shut down, students were not allowed to leave when classes ended at 3:15 p.m., Kuss said. They were allowed to leave after security checks were completed about 4 p.m., she said.

About 1,600 ninth- through 12th-graders attend the school.

Waukegan police declined to comment and referred all calls to the school district's main office.

No other details were available.
