Aurora man charged in beating
A 24-year-old man has been charged with aggravated battery in connection with a fight that left a Chicago man critically injured over the weekend.
Kareem A. Havard also faces charges of unlawful restraint and domestic battery stemming from the early Saturday morning incident.
Police said Havard showed up uninvited at his ex-girlfriend's apartment on the 800 block of North Lake Street. The woman was at a different residence in the complex when Havard arrived, but enlisted two men who were also visiting from Chicago to help her retrieve some belongings from her apartment when she learned Havard was there.
Havard asked the two men to leave when they showed up at the woman's apartment and they did, police said. When the men left, Havard locked the apartment door and began to push and shove the woman around the apartment, police said. She was able to break free, unlock the door and flee, but Havard followed her into the hallway where the two Chicago men intervened and fought with Havard.
During the fight, police officials said Havard "slammed" one of the men's head into the floor. Havard fled, but turned himself into police on Sunday.
The unidentified 26-year-old victim suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of the attack and remains in critical condition at a suburban Chicago hospital, police said.
Havard is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
