Oak Brook man dies after car goes into retention pond
Police are continuing to investigate why a 29-year-old Oak Brook man drove his car into a retention pond near a Lombard restaurant on Sunday.
The DuPage County Coroner's Office was scheduled to perform an autopsy on Ali M. Abbas Monday. Foul play is not suspected.
Deputy Police Chief Dane Cuny said Abbas' 2002 Audi A4 collided with several other unoccupied vehicles in a restaurant parking lot shared by Champs and Weber Grill at 2301 Fountain Square before it went into the pond and was submerged in 30 feet of water.
The incident was reported about 8:15 p.m., and it took the Lombard Fire Department's dive team about an hour to extricate Abbas, Cuny said. Abbas was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove where he was pronounced dead just before 10 p.m.
A worker from one of the nearby restaurants attempted to save Abbas, but he was unable to make
a rescue because the car was continuing to sink and the water was too cold, Cuny said.
