Public option needed in health care fix

As the national health care reform debate works its way through the legislative process, we are concerned that all Americans have the choice of a quality, affordable public insurance plan. A public option is key to true health reform, providing consumer choice and lowering costs.

The current health care system is dangerous to both our economy and our health. We must reduce the costs of health care for individuals, businesses and communities. Cost containment measures must be consistent with the overall goal of universal coverage; data on benefits and health outcomes must be made publicly available.

We urge our members of Congress, Sen. Richard Durbin, Sen. Roland Burris and Rep. Bill Foster to demonstrate leadership for true health care reform.
