More money totals for congressional races surface
Democratic U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean isn't having the same money problems as those plaguing the woman considered the top Republican candidate for the 8th Congressional District seat.
Bean, the 8th District incumbent from Barrington, raised $157,571 from July 1 through Sept. 30, according to documents filed at the Federal Election Commission's Web site that became available Thursday. Her total receipts were listed at $791,253.
Long Grove Mayor Maria Rodriguez, considered the top Republican candidate in the February 2010 primary, raised $22,525 during the filing period.
Officials from Bean's congressional office refused to comment about the campaign financing. The district she represents covers parts of Lake, Cook and McHenry counties.
Bean filed her financial statements late Thursday, the deadline for congressional candidates to file campaign finance reports for the quarter.
Rodriguez was the only one of the three declared GOP candidates to file campaign financing paperwork, which covers donations received, loans, and spending.
Two other announced Republican candidates - Greg Jacobs of Mundelein and John Dawson of Barrington - did not raise the $5,000 required by law to file financial reports.
Repeat candidate Bill Scheurer has said he plans to run for the seat as a Green Party candidate, but he also did not file an FEC report.
Bean, in her third term, is the lone Democratic candidate so far. She defeated a primary challenger two years ago.
Meanwhile, two candidates in the 10th Congressional District showed some money-raising prowess during the filing period.
FEC documents show Dan Seals, a Democrat from Wilmette who was an unsuccessful challenger to Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk for the seat in the last two elections, collected $303,391. His total receipts were at $318,762.
GOP candidate Robert Dold of Kenilworth raised $258,332. His total receipts are the same amount because he's a first-time candidate.
Both candidates filed documents late Thursday ahead of the deadline.
Boundaries for the 10th District include much of the North Shore and some Northwest suburbs in Cook and Lake counties. Kirk, of Highland Park, isn't seeking re-election because he's running for U.S. Senate.
The 2010 primary election is scheduled for Feb. 2. The 2010 general election is Nov. 2.
