Elgin to get recognition for food drives

Bright lights came to Elgin's Fire Station 2 Friday afternoon, but it had nothing to do with an emergency call.

A camera crew from "Good Morning America" paid a visit and interviewed firefighters as part of segment that will air between 7 and 9 a.m. Monday on ABC.

The story, headed by Correspondent Cameron Mathison, will spotlight efforts across the county to raise money and gather food to help others during the economic downturn, said Jennifer Pereira, Good Morning America producer.

On Friday, crews interviewed Elgin Fire Lt. Robert Bedard and others as they prepared a spaghetti dinner as part of a fundraiser for a program called Feeding America.

Through the initiative, people host dinners and guests make donations instead of bringing a dish. Macy's department stores match the donations.

In Elgin, fundraising efforts will assist the Northern Illinois Food Bank based in St. Charles.

Last year, firefighters also volunteered during a citywide food drive.

Mary Camacho, chairwoman of the city's fire and police commission, said it was fitting the firefighters were spotlighted for their charitable work.

"They always help. The firefighters, you can always count on them," she said.

City officials also hope national TV recognition will remind residents of the ongoing need at Elgin area food banks.

"We're heading into another winter and we're hoping for the same generosity as last year," said Cherie Murphy, the city's marketing officer. "All the pantries in town need food - the Salvation Army, (Community) Crisis Center - all of them are gearing up for a long winter."

Donations can be made at city hall, any fire station, the Centre of Elgin and other locations. For details, call the United Way of Elgin at (847) 741-2259.
