'Supportive living' supports seniors

Some say government and health care don't mix. Others disagree. But even those on opposite sides of today's health care debate can agree on the benefits of Illinois' innovative Supportive Living Program for seniors.

Supportive living is a shining example of how a public and private partnership can result in a win-win and offer value to seniors looking for affordable and quality housing. Here in Illinois, assisted living-once only an option for the wealthy-is now an affordable and desirable option for many senior citizens. Desirable because some of those who qualify for Supportive Living would have otherwise been inappropriately placed in nursing homes, even though their needs did not require that level of care and subsequent cost.

Now is a good time to learn about this lesser-known, cost-effective alternative. Unlike most assisted living communities that can only accept private payment, these select "supportive living" communities can offer the best of both worlds: the help seniors need at a price they can afford. The state-sponsored Supportive Living program is available to those who are 65 or older and qualify as being financially and medically in need.

The residents at Alexian Village of Elk Grove, the supportive living community where I work, enjoy a robust social calendar, convenient transportation programs, meal preparation, housekeeping and other personal care services as needed. They appreciate the financial safety net that Alexian Village and other supportive living communities offer. In the event that personal funds are depleted, residents can apply for financial assistance through the Supportive Living program, allowing them to stay in their apartments and receive the care and services they need.
