Grace McWayne school to hold fundraiser
On Friday, Oct. 16, Grace McWayne Elementary in Batavia will hold its first walkathon. The new event includes warmup exercises, refreshments, music and fun festivities. Students will walk or jog around a predetermined path at the school for a total of two miles. Students and their families are encouraged to walk together.
The goal of this fundraising effort is to: complete the purchase and installation of classroom projectors; increase funding of field trips; provide a new and entertaining physical activity; fund outdoor education day; and provide materials for the Learning Resource Center.
Walk-a-Thon Rewards will include:
• Students submitting $25 in pledges earn a walkathon T-shirt. (T-shirt to be worn on day of walkathon.)
• Students who submit $50 in pledges earn a Grace McWayne water bottle.
• The male and female student who submits the most dollars of pledges will get to be "Principal for the Day." In case of tie, names will be drawn.
• Each family submitting a total of $150 or more in pledges will be entered into a drawing for one of four prize packages. Corporate sponsor pledges collected by families are included toward this reward. Package includes: one front row parking spot for Fun Fair; $50 gift certificate to be used at November book fair; one Family Skate Pass for four to Funway Entertainment Center.
The class with the highest amount of pledges per grade will earn a pizza party; the school earns free popcorn at lunch once 50 percent of goal ($10,000) is met; the school earns portable soccer nets and cones for recess when 100 percent of the goal of $20,000 is met.
According to event co-chair Eva Dorman, this event was created based on feedback from families. It replaces fall gift wrap sales and other activities that were less able to engage the kids.
"This is our first and biggest fundraiser of the year and we have great incentives and ideas to make this a fun event for the students," said event co-chair Sue McNamara. "And, what could be better than exercising while we do it?"
