Abortion is not a health care issue

Mr. Pasternak recently suggested that abortion is a health care issue. Would he also suggest slavery was an employment issue? I would hope not because both slavery and abortion are predominately moral issues - if one believes in a creative, loving God. If not, then there are no absolute rights or wrongs and abortion can be considered as merely a health care issue.

Slavery was abolished when the majority recognized it was immoral. Similarly, the American people are increasingly acknowledging that abortion is immoral. The majority now classify themselves as pro-life. They have come to the conclusion that the protection of the most innocent and defenseless among us is indeed a social justice issue.

There are those compassionate about the unborn but don't feel comfortable imposing their beliefs on others. In short, they don't think we can legislate morality. I would contend that we legislate morality all the time; it is only a question of whose morality.

I can't steal your car even if I needed it. We legislated against slavery and millions have enjoyed their God given right to freedom since then.

Mr. Pasternak goes on to say," Abortion opponents have not offered to take in babies of those who want to give them up". His perception, although not unique, is totally unfounded.

The pro-life movement cares very much about babies, both before and after they're born. A nationwide support system of pregnancy resource centers have been established to provide support for women both facing untimely pregnancy and the demands of a new parent. Help placing their babies for adoption is also provided. Incidentally, a 2002 Government Study concluded that approximately 40,000 babies are given up for adoption each year and 600,000 couples are actively seeking to adopt.

Hopefully, the American people will one day consider Abortion unthinkable, in the same way that slavery is unthinkable today.
