Editor says he was threatened by NIU police chief

DEKALB -- Officials of Northern Illinois University say they review the performance of Police Chief Donald Grady after a student journalist claimed he was threatened during an interview.

Northern Star editor Justin Weaver says he was questioning Grady about the hiring of former Colorado State University police chief Dexter Yarbrough, who quickly resigned after reports Colorado State made two investigations into Yarbrough's conduct.

Weaver claims Grady spent nearly three hours accusing him of ruining Yarbrough's career. He says at one point Grady offered the possibility of future employment if a story was written painting Yarbrough in a favorable light

Weaver said Grady, who hasn't commented on the allegations, implied the editor could face negative implications if he didn't write the story.
