You can help recreate America's first flag

The Geneva History Center will be offering a rare opportunity for the public to help make a piece of history. At 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, Donna Lehrer will explain her quest to make a high-quality reproduction of the Betsy Ross flag and actually give participants of all ages a chance to help in the effort. On a recent trip to Philadelphia, Lehrer, owner of Esther's Place, a fiber arts studio, learned that the original Betsy Ross flag no longer exists. Since that time, Lehrer has been busy coming up with a plan to re-create the flag with American wool.

During this program, participants will learn the importance of re-creating the American flag; where the yarn comes from and how to weave the yarn into material; and how different dyes are used to make the flag authentic.

In addition, participants will have a chance to assist in the weaving. The completed flag will be presented to the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia in the spring of 2010.

Cost is $5 for adults or $3 for children and History Center members. The Geneva History Center is at 113 S. Third St., downtown Geneva. For more information, call the Geneva History Center at (630) 232-4951.
