Furry competitors descend on Lake Villa

For the ferret faithful and those who fancy cute but sometimes daffy pets, Saturday in Lake Villa will be a chance to trade stories and showcase their sleek friends.

The kissing contest also promises to be interesting as Greater Chicago Ferret Association holds its annual show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Gavin North Elementary School, 37850 N. Route 59.

Lithe and seemingly in constant motion, these members of the weasel family are said to be gentle yet inquisitive pets. Ferrets weigh up to 5 pounds, about the size of a kitten.

"I have three. They're very playful. They're very curious. They're not strictly a cage animal you put on a shelf and look at," said Allison Sansone, spokeswoman for the 232-member group.

The contest will have all the trappings of traditional animal competitions, with judging in 10 categories including color and other characteristics and a Best in Show winner.

Tube races and a kissing contest are among the activities designed for the distinctive critters to show off their personalities.

"The contest is how many times your ferret will give you kisses," Sansone said.

Dozens of furry competitors are expected, with attendees from four states, some in costume.

"Seriously, this whole thing is hysterical," according to Sansone.

For the general public there will be a raffle/auction with prizes, including a Chicago tour package featuring the Shedd Aquarium and Willis Tower sky deck, as well as jewelry and other gifts. Vendors will be on hand, and general information on the little creatures will be available.

Admission is $10 per family; $5 for those 13 and older; and, $2 for those under 12.

Proceeds benefit the Lyons-based organization, which cares for and shelters homeless ferrets.

"A lot of people will buy them from pet stores and not know a lot about them or know what they're taking on," Sansone said.

The not-for-profit organization established in 1987 finds homes for more than 200 ferrets each year.
