Church hosts drama about Methodist founder's life
Methodist founder John Wesley, portrayed by actor Roger Nelson, visited Aurora on Oct. 4. Nelson presented "The Man from Aldersgate," a 90-minute solo performance, at Aurora's Bethany of Fox Valley United Methodist Church.
Sponsored local Aurora-area Methodist churches, the award-winning production has played over 1,300 times in 32 countries and all 50 states.
The performance told of the life and times of Wesley, the man who rode more than 250,000 miles on horseback to preach about Jesus Christ.
Wesley (Nelson) recounted how his transformation through faith sparked a revival that changed England and America. Wesley served as a missionary for two years in Georgia before returning to England.
He exhorted his audience to embrace a more disciplined life of faith through his teachings from the Bible.
As Wesley, Nelson shared new insights into the importance of prayer, how personal failure can teach trust in Christ, how religion is the most dangerous idol, and how a mother's faith can shape a child's destiny.
Nelson greeted guests at a reception following his performance.
