Algonquin school students sickened by fumes
Three students and two teachers were taken to the hospital Wednesday after they were sickened by fumes from roofing work at Westfield Community School in Algonquin, firefighters said.
The kids and staff at the K-8 school were taken to the hospital mainly as a precautionary measure, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Batallion Chief John Greene said.
"Let's take the cautious road and make sure everybody's OK," Greene said.
Paramedics also checked out about 100 kids who were not taken to the hospital, Greene said. Some of the students went home after their parents were contacted.
The school was not evacuated, and classes continued as planned. Firefighters were not able to detect dangerous chemicals in the air at the school.
Emergency crews responded to the school at 2100 Sleepy Hollow Road at 11:07 a.m. and left around 1:45 p.m.
