Antioch races into the next season with its annual Fall Fest
The village of Antioch's Fall Fest and Adventure Race are back this Saturday, Oct. 10. We asked Special Events Supervisor Shawn Roby to tell us everything you need to know about this event.
Q. What makes this such a fabulous event?
A. The combination of the many activities throughout the day coupled with the music makes the day fun for all ages. Following the Adventure Race we will have 6th Annual Running of the Weiner Dachshund Races sponsored by the Barker Shop. This family fun event pits dachshunds against each other in a foot race to the finish. Immediately following the Weiner Races we will have the great Pumpkin Roll sponsored by State Bank of the Lakes. This event is limited to the first 50 participants. The final registration event of the day will be the Bean Bag Tournament sponsored by Great Lakes Credit Union.
The Fall Fest will also have music throughout the day provided by a combination of DJs and musicians.
Q. How long has this event been in existence? How has it changed, and what is new this year?
A. Fall Fest itself has been around for two years. But it was a combination of two long-standing events (Octoberfest and Halloween Howl) that had been in the community for years. This year we put a little extra focus in the Adventure Race, trying to get more challenges and larger participation in the event. This is a great bonding time for family and friends to show off their mental and physical talents. We also made some changes to our Dachshund races by adding heats so that we don't have so many dogs running at one time.
Q. What kind of activities will appeal to kids and families?
A. From noon to 4:30 p.m. we have all of our kid's activities, which include:
• The Haystack Hunt, where State Bank of the Lakes puts money in an area with hay and the kids locate the money; • Kids coloring contest, sponsored by America United Bank;
• Moonwalk, sponsored by Lindenhurst Early Childhood Center;
• Many mini games, sponsored by Antioch Parks and Recreation.
Q. What about adults? What does the event offer them?
A. The Pumpkin Roll and Dachshund races are always entertaining but we also have the competition between the Limerick Lounge and The Lodge. We also have the musical portion of the day, which begins around 4 p.m. and continue until the end of the night. Also the Haunted Walkway was very successful last year, and we are hoping for the same strong attendance again this year.
Q. What kinds of food and beverages will be for sale?
A. We have the normal staple of foods like hot dogs, hamburgers and so forth, but we feature a pig roast for all to enjoy. We will have beverages, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic.
Q. Tell us about the volunteers and organizers who pull this together.
A. We have many businesses and volunteers who come together to help run this event. Our volunteers include school groups as well as residents who like to be involved in the community event. The businesses help tremendously due to the fact they run each of the events they are associated with for the most part.
